Alzheimer’s Association reveals new report on caregiver’s top stressors

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A recent report shares the top stressors caregivers have while taking care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s dementia.

According to the report, the estimated cost of caring for people with Alzheimer’s is to reach $360 billion this year, a $15 billion increase from last year not including unpaid care from family caregivers and friends.

Top stressors of the caregiver job include emotional, health, and physical related challenges such as higher rates of chronic conditions like stroke, diabetes, and cancer. There is also a higher risk of depression and high emotional and physical stress.

The Alzheimer’s Association estimated that 6.9 million people 65 and older in the country are living with Alzheimer’s dementia. Included in that statistic is an estimated amount of 426,500 people with Alzheimer’s in New York State.
