ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – If you are able to watch News 8 WROC – TV over-the-air, then you are in the path of totality. All of Monroe County will be plunged into darkness on April 8, 2024 at approximately 3:20 pm. You don’t need to travel far though to fall out of this path that the moon carves during the solar eclipse in it’s thin strip from Mexico to eastern Canada.

‘Be Aware, Be Prepared, Be There:’ Monroe County asks residents to prepare for the Total Solar Eclipse

In fact, nearly all of Western New York is in the path of totality. Here is an incomplete list of counties in the path that will see a total solar eclipse:

Orleans

Genesee

Wyoming

Monroe

Niagara

Erie

Livingston

Ontario

Wayne

Oswego

ECLIPSE COVERAGE: Tackling traffic and other public safety points

If you want to be on a boat somewhere on Lake Ontario, you will also be in the path. What might be more helpful is a list of counties in New York State that are not in totality. These areas will get very close to complete coverage of the sun by the moon, but not 100 percent. They are:

The southern half of Steuben

The southern half of Allegany

The southern half of Yates (Penn Yann is just on the border)

The southern half of Seneca

The southern half of Cayuga

The southern half Onondaga

Most of Madison

The southern half of Oneida

Schuyler

Tompkins

Outside of the path of totality, you need to use proper eye protection throughout the entirety of the event. Within the path of totality, you can look into the sun during the approximately three minutes in which you fall under the shadow of the moon.
