ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A restaurant in Charlotte has become the first in New York State to be able to accept SNAP benefits.

Lakeside Haven now allows SNAP recipients to buy a hot meal at the restaurant with their benefits — part of the Restaurant Meals Program out of New York’s Office of Temporary Disability Assistance.

The initiative is new and in order to qualify, you will need to have SNAP benefits and be a senior citizen, disabled, or unhoused.

Karin Williams is the owner of Lakeside Haven and shared her happiness for the restaurant taking part in this program.

“Charlotte is a community of many seniors, many who are facing financial struggles and we thought what better way to help out with that than to participate in something that allows them to come in and have a hot meal,” said Williams. “For many seniors, this is the only outing they get during the day. We’re the only people they talk to. For some of them, it’s like the highlight of their day to come in and if they’re struggling financially and that’s not possible, then why not find a way to fix that?”

Approved restaurants will be added to the program in the next few months, according to the Office of Temporary Disability Assistance.
