City assures 911 calls are still functional amid cellular outage

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — As cell phone carriers are seeing a spike in outage reports, the City of Rochester is addressing concerns about needing to make emergency phone calls.

A spokesperson of the City of Rochester told News 8 that the 911 call center is still receiving calls amid these outages. They said that carriers have rerouting systems during issues.

Mayor Evans addresses concerns regarding 2024 property assessments

In a press conference on Thursday, Mayor Evans reaffirmed this point, explaining that 911 calls are extremely important and no 911 calls have been lost.

“Any 911 call that has dropped, it is picked up immediately, and the person is called back. The most important thing is if your carrier is down and you have to call 911, it will be rerouted.”

Carriers such as AT&T, Cricket Wireless, and Verizon are working urgently to restore service to affected customers. AT&T has experienced over 73,00 0 outages around 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning.

It has not been confirmed what the issue is or how long the situation will go on for.
