HENRIETTA, N.Y. (WROC) – It’s a growing mission to dress girls for prom, who otherwise might not be able to attend.

Fairy Godmothers of Rochester is in need of like-new or gently used dresses, accessories, and shoes to help support their upcoming season.

The volunteer organization has set up shop at Marketplace Mall near the North Entrance.

This Saturday, they’ll host their biggest donation drive of the year from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. where drop-offs can be made.

“We have so many girls in our area with tremendous financial need. We are servicing girls who would otherwise not be able to attend their prom. Prom is so expensive now,” said Ami Salzman, a longtime volunteer who has taken over as director.

Fairy Godmothers of Rochester was founded by Rene Spallina and Cynthia Jackson in 2004. Over the course of 20 years, they’ve outfitted thousands of girls for the occasion and average 500 per season.

“There are bridal salons who donate to us that also carry prom dresses. They’re wonderfully generous, and all kinds of people from the Rochester area as well. It’s everyone from the suburbs to the city and all different tastes,” said Salzman.

During the month of March, high schoolers will be able to stop in two days a week and can choose their outfit for a $5 donation. However, Salzman says no one is turned away.

“Watching a girl come in who maybe has her head down because she’s having a rough time, really, we get that a lot. When I get a girl who goes from that into this glowing smile, and she can’t believe how fortunate she’s been in our space. It’s a lot of tears, happy tears. It’s extremely rewarding,” said Salzman.

Community members are encouraged to bring dresses and accessory items to the Fairy Godmothers of Rochester storefront at Marketplace Mall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Distribution will begin in March, each Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Items are also being collected at the following businesses during operating hours:

Rockcastle Florist – 870 Long Pond Rd., Rochester, NY 14612

Rockcastle Florist – 100 S. Main St., Canandaigua, NY 14424

Continental School of Beauty – 633 Jefferson Rd., Rochester, NY 14623

Your Perfect Day – 770 Ridge Rd., Sodus, NY 14451

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A crowd gathered outside Rochester City Hall Wednesday to call for rent stabilization. Local elected officials joined Rochester tenants and the city-wide tenants union today to call for Rochester officials to opt into the Emergency Tenant Protection Act. This act would limit rent increases for around 25,000 Rochester residents. Specifically, those living in buildings built before 1974 with six or fewer units. Advocates say over one-half of Rochester renters are rent-burdened, paying 30 percent or more […]
