ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Rochester woman who police said ran away from a car crash that killed her sister was convicted of manslaughter and assault Tuesday.

Charlaura Lockhart, 33, died on January 1, 2023. Investigators said she was a passenger in a car which hit another car then crashed into a tree at Denver Street and Hazelwood Terrace in Rochester. A second passenger was also hospitalized.

Police identified Jellia Lockhart, 30, as the driver. They said she ran away from the scene and lied about the crash. She was arrested and charged later that month.

“I can only imagine the pain that the Lockhart family has experienced over the past year, with the death of one daughter because of the actions of another,” Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley said in a statement issued Tuesday. “I urge the community to remember Charlaura’s life and her devastating death before anyone chooses to drive recklessly.”

Lockhart’s sentencing is set for March 28.
