ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Gas prices once again have increased across the US and in much of New York State during February break, according to the latest report from AAA.

The report says that the national gas price average has gone up eight cents while the statewide average in New York went up by two cents.

According to AAA, a shutdown at the BP-Whiting refinery in Indiana was a major contributor to the national average going up. The refinery processes thousands of barrels of crude oil a day. In New York, the report says the few cent increase is common for this time of year.

Experts say that since this is the beginning of February break, another increase in gas demand and prices is expected.

“One of the most critical elements to how much gas prices will climb is how quickly and effectively refiners can finish their pre-summer maintenance, start producing EPA-mandated summer gasoline, and build up supply of it before Memorial Day,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

AAA reports the following increases and decreases of gas prices in the Central and Western New York areas:

Batavia – $3.23 (One-cent decrease)

Buffalo – $3.30 (Two-cent decrease)

Elmira – $3.07 (Two-cent increase)

Ithaca – $3.22 (Three-cent increase)

Rochester – $3.27 (One-cent increase)

Rome – $3.34 (Three-cent increase)

Syracuse – $3.26 (Two-cent increase)

Watertown – $3.29 (Seven-cent increase)
