ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A Gates resident helped police track down a scam that started with an email, led to a phone conversation and ended up with an in-person visit.

Gates Police said the potential victim received an email stating her Netflix account was expiring. While attempting to deal with the problem, she was led to believe she was forwarded to her bank and was asked to empty her bank account and transfer the money to another account through a so-called “federal reserve agent”.

The resident continued a phone call that suggested the “agent” would be arriving at her home in a KIA, and she should provide him with the money. She called police.

Gates Police were on scene when 29-year-old Harpeet Singh pulled into the resident’s driveway wearing a bandana. Police confronted him and said Singh told them he was “helping pick up money for friend in New York City”.

Singh was charged with Attempted Grand Larceny, third degree, and Impersonating an Officer to commit a Felony. He was released with an appearance ticket.

Officers also learned Singh was arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol in November, 2023, for crossing into the U.S. through Arizona illegally. His immigration hearing is not scheduled until March of 2025, according to Gates PD.
