ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The City of Batavia Police Department is investigating an altercation that led to the death of a Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant overnight Sunday at Batavia Downs.

Batavia Police Department Chief Shawn Heubusch said around 12:45 a.m., Genesee County Sheriff’s Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello, who was on assignment detail at the casino, was notified about an altercation inside Batavia Downs. After a verbal confrontation inside the bar, Sergeant Sanfratello and Batavia Downs security staff were said to have escorted 33-year-old Michael Elmore and 39-year-old Lyndsey Jean Wilcox out of the building.

According to BPD, Wilcox became physically combative with the Sanfratello who, with the help of security, was able to place Wilcox under arrest.

BPD said Elmore tried to interfere with the arrest and became physically combative before attacking Sanfratello. Security officers and Batavia Downs patrons attempted to assist Sanfratello which led to a physical fight. Police said Sanfratello attempted to use a taser on Elmore which did not appear to stop him.

Heubusch said sometime during the physical altercation, Sanfratello became unresponsive, and CPR was started immediately. Sanfratello was pronounced deceased by the Genesee County Coroner. Police said the incident resulted in the death of Sanfratello.

Sanfratello is a 32-year veteran of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and was working a special assignment detail at the Batavia Downs while on duty.

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office said they transferred the investigation into a line-of-duty death incident to the City of Batavia Police Department.
