ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — As we continue to see these wet conditions remain, plumbers in our area are watching the weather and preparing.

Service Manager Eric Harvey with American Plumbing Heating and Cooling said his crews have responded to everything we’ve been seeing — calls for water main breaks, floods, and root intrusions.

WEATHER FORECAST: Snow for the remainder of Sunday

Harvey told News 8 while the time of year is not always a way of knowing when events like these will happen, but as they watch trending weather, they are able to stock more sump pumps and other useful materials, so they are prepared.

Harvey explained they’re commonly finding the excess water and build up between the storm and sanitary sewers are getting overwhelmed.

‘We had to protect the homeowners:’ County officials provide insight on sewage discharge in Genesee River

And while responding to floods in houses, he says it is causing damage to boilers, furnaces, and water heaters.

While there is nothing a home or business owner can do while an active flood is occurring, there are preventative measures you can take and emphasized the importance of getting a professional’s opinion.

Flooded roadways, power outages due to heavy rain moving through

“You can make sure all of your systems are operating properly, even if you’re not familiar with them,” Harvey said. “We can simply come over and go over with a homeowner thinks that they need to take a look at and be conscious of, and the different options and backup systems that there are. You know you have another option and you’re not just stuck with a heavy repair upfront, and you can still mitigate that water after something happened.”
