CANANDAIGUA N.Y. (WROC) – Today is the season opening of Kampgrounds of America in Canandaigua. Owner Jon Arsenault says for the solar eclipse people have booked a reservation way ahead of time.

“For this specific weekend it was definitely a year in advance. We have had some cancellations because people made it so early so those who may be changed their plans. We did get some people getting some last-minute reservations with cancellations. It’s almost like a holiday weekend for us,” Arsenault said.

“Right now, if I went and looked at the computer, everything would be booked,” he goes on to say.

He says on a sold-out weekend that typically equates to 140-150 families on the campsite.

Retired travelers Teresa and Don Wittig at KOA who are originally from Ontario, Canada say they’ve been traveling since November going to places like Texas, Virginia, and now Canandaigua NY.

They say even though they’ll be arriving home just before the arrival of the eclipse, that doesn’t mean they won’t see it.

“We’re not going to miss out cause where we’re going, we’re in the eclipse also. Longpoint is in the path. So we’re there, and we were where Courville is in Texas, that’s the path also. So, we’ve been talking to people. We’re ahead of the eclipse, we’re bringing it,” said the Wittigs.

KOA in Canandaigua has a few new things this season that travelers can look forward to like eclipse merchandise and Hunts Brothers Pizza in addition to the opening of their own cafe on the site.

Owners say even though they’re booked it is encouraged to get on the waitlist in case there are cancellations. If you’re interested you can find that here.
