NYSP: U-Haul chase leads to suspect jumping into family’s car

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New York State Police announced the arrest of a man who allegedly led police on a chase and then jumped into a car occupied with children.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon when troopers responded to a U-Haul driving fast on I-390 in Wayland.

Troopers tried stopping the Chevy Silverado U-Haul, which led to a pursuit. During the chase, the driver allegedly tried to drive head-on into a Steuben County deputy, who avoided colliding with the U-Haul.

The chase ended when the U-Haul crashed into a Community Bank in Dansville. Police said the driver ran behind several businesses and then jumped into a car occupied by a family with three children.

The suspect, 35-year-old William J. Crowe, was arrested and taken to Steuben County Jail for arraignment. He faces the following charges:

Second-degree attempted robbery of a motor vehicle.

First-degree reckless endangerment two counts of reckless endangerment in the second degree.

Two counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Two counts of petit larceny.

Resisting arrest

Three counts of endangering the welfare of a child

DWAI Drugs — Prior conviction in 10 years

DWI — Previous conviction in 10 years.

Multiple traffic infractions.
