ROCHESTER. N.Y. (WROC) — Ontario County Sheriff’s Office warned residents about a recent increase in scam phone calls.

According to OCSO, they received several calls from residents who reported they had been contacted by someone claiming to be a deputy with their agency. Deputies said the person had told residents they missed a court appearance, claiming they had a warrant out for their arrest. This individual proceeded to tell them what their bail would be and required 10 percent of it to be paid over the phone.

Deputies warn residents that they will never ask for money to be paid over the phone for bail or to avoid a warrant arrest. They ask anyone who received these phone calls to contact the Sheriff’s Office directly.
