Retired NYS Trooper from Rochester dies of illness from 9/11 aftermath

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — New York State Police announced the death of retired Trooper from Rochester on Wednesday.

State Police say Steven Tyrrell’s death was a result of an illness sustained from serving an assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. According to NYS Troopers, Tyrrell was assigned to New York City to aid in search and recovery efforts.

Trooper Tyrell joined the State Police in October 1997 and served for 26 years. He was last assigned to Troop T in Henrietta and spent the majority of his career there.

Trooper Tyrrell is survived by his three children; Sean, Kathryn, and Rachel.

No word yet on funeral arrangements.
