ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — This winter has been warm. Warm to the point that most of it we’ve spent as one of the top 5 warmest winters on record. Of note, if we ended winter, for this example from December 1 to yesterday, which is as of writing February 9, it would be the second warmest at 35.2°. The warmest being 1931-32, which was 35.4° through this same time frame.

February of course hasn’t been a slouch in contributing to this. February 9, 2024, was 62° tying the record high for that date from 2001. February 10, 2024, was 58°, which BROKE the record high from 1881 of 57°. Tying or breaking any record is impressive. But breaking one from 143 years ago is another step up altogether.

20 of the last 28 days have been above average in fact. Be mindful though, “average” in this case is a moving target. The average high for January 14 is just 33°, while the average high for February 10 is 34°. While that isn’t a big jump, you do have to use a bit of scrutiny when you look at data over this long of a time frame. Especially as we head towards spring when at a point essentially every day what’s considered average for highs and lows is changing.
