ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (WROC) — The Bills defense this season is seventh in passing yards allowed despite not having top cornerback Tre’Davious White for most of the season. The unit is fourth in sacks without having fully healthy years from DaQuan Jones and Von Miller.

They are ranked third in turnovers without All-Pro linebacker Matt Milano. It’s arguably Sean McDermott’s best work since arriving in Buffalo.

“There’s been absolutely no panic,” said Bills defensive line coach Eric Washington.

Washington explained that there’s been no indicators from McDermott that there isn’t a challenge his team can’t meet based off of who is available to play.

“He instills confidence in every single person in the room when we talk,” added Washington.

Cornerback Dane Jackson said McDermott does a great job of putting his players in the right position.

“Just letting those guys be comfortable in what they do best,” said Jackson. “I feel like he puts us in that position and lets us gain confidence as we grow.”

Micah Hyde, who has played under McDermott the last seven seasons, lauded the Bills’ head coach ability to make in-game adjustments on the fly.

“You can make adjustments within the game because we all understand the defense so well and have been around each other for so long that it comes more natural than for other teams,” Hyde explained.

Von Miller added that he views the Bills head coach is a teacher first and foremost.

“We call him coach, but he’s a teacher of men,” said Miller. “What makes Coach McDermott different is that he puts us in his mind. When he’s calling plays in the game, we know exactly why he’s calling it and exactly what he’s thinking.”

Bills defensive back Cam Lewis has recorded 25 combined tackles in a reserve duty for the defense. Lewis is one of the many players who has had to step into the starting lineup due to injury.

“We always move as one heartbeat,” said Lewis. “He always has the confidence in us that we can do the same job as the starters.”

Hyde said although the coaching staff deserve credit for having the backups ready to go when necessary, the players themselves deserve flowers. Hyde added that when a new cornerback comes into the game, he can’t be responsible for that player.

“We expect you to do your job,” said Hyde. “We preach it every single day.”
