SPENCERPORT, N.Y. (WROC) – Community members in Spencerport had the chance to ask fire officials about the fire district’s plan to bring on its first paid chief.

The Spencerport Fire District initially announced its looking to hire a chief with a $150 thousand salary.

Thursday, when asked about that salary – officials told the community that’s not necessarily the exact number, and it could fluctuate.

The district says it’s looking for the perfect fit, and doesn’t want money to push the right person away from the position.

Some at Thursday night’s hearing voiced concern that having a hired position might drive volunteers away.

The department admits it has 17 open firefighter positions right now.

Some residents say the district needs to be better at outreach when it comes to filling these vacancies.

It’s something the district says – is part of its plan to revamp operations in the future.

The proposal to hire a fire chief is not set in stone.  Officials say it’s not something that will happen right away.
