ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — SUNY announced that it will be phasing out the usage of single-use plastic containers across it’s campuses.

According to SUNY, the policy aims to eliminate plastic items such as bags, drink bottles, food products, utensils, plastic wrap, and packaging. SUNY is working with public service platform SustainChain to create a plastics-free solutions hub.

Some of our campuses, such as SUNY ESF and SUNY New Paltz, have taken significant steps over the past few years to eliminate the impact of plastics, including single-use plastics such as water and other beverage bottles, on their campuses,” said SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. “SUNY’s direct action to make our operations more sustainable complements our research and education to create a better future for all.”

In 2022, SUNY’s Board of Trustees formed a task force to eliminate single-use plastics with the intent to make progress towards a plastic-free environment. SUNY says it is working to switch to clean energy, promote green workforce development, and spur research into climate research.

“I applaud SUNY Chancellor King for his leadership in helping to end the scourge of single-use plastics across the SUNY system,” said New York DEC commissioner Basil Seggros. “DEC encourages New Yorkers to transition to reusable items whenever and wherever possible and to use common-sense precautions to keep reusable items clean and safe for repeat use.”
