ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A woman was accused of stealing thousands of dollars of her mother’s pension payments following her mother’s death years ago.

According to the New York State Comptroller’s Office, 59-year-old Patricia Chatley’s mother, Janet, retired from the county’s Department of Social Services in 1994 and received around $1,000 a month in benefits. They said she died on January 5, 2020, which meant the payments were supposed to stop.

It was alleged that Chatley, a member of the New York State and Local Retirement System, did not notify the bank nor the NYSLRS of her mother’s death. Money continued to be sent to a joint account before Chatley transferred it to her personal account. Investigators said she collected $34,548 between January 2020 and June 2022.

Following the investigation, Chatley was arrested and charged with grand larceny in the third degree and was issued an appearance ticket. She is scheduled to appear in court on February 12, 2024.
